Why this essay works
Instead of the whole essay, here are the moments worth studying. Each clip is a real passage from an anonymized personal statement, paired with commentary on what the writer actually did.
Story, The hook that pulls the reader in
A specific scene, image, or line of dialogue. The reader should be able to see it before they know what the essay is about.
“You should exfoliate every time you lose a round,” my debate partner once told me, half serious.“That makes zero sense,” I said.“About as much sense as refusing to wear your loser clothes again. Fabric isn't the enemy.”Part of me knew he was right. But the other part, the part that still uses the same brand of mechanical pencil (blue barrel, 0.7 millimeter lead) for every math exam, was unmoved.
What worked. The scene is built entirely through dialogue. No throat-clearing, no "one day at debate practice" preamble, just two friends already mid-conversation, and we pick up who they are from how they talk to each other. Then the writer turns on herself with the mechanical pencil detail (blue barrel, 0.7 millimeter). That level of self-knowledge inside the first paragraph tells the reader this essay is going to be honest about small things, which is exactly the kind of writer they want to keep reading.
